Transforming Education: The 29 de Noviembre School Reconstruction Project

Introduction

The 29 de Noviembre School, situated in the district of Nueva Colonia, Turbo, Colombia, stands as a beacon of hope in a community plagued by poverty and inadequate infrastructure. Built in 2010, this educational institution has been a vital resource for the local population, providing much-needed access to education and opportunities for the children of the region.

Initial Challenges

Despite its importance, the school faced numerous challenges from its inception. Situated in an area characterized by high temperatures, humidity, and heavy rainfall, the original building design failed to account for the harsh climatic conditions. As a result, students endured classrooms that were uncomfortably hot and dark, lacking proper ventilation and protection from the elements.

Addressing Community Needs

In addition to climatic challenges, the school’s design also overlooked the broader needs of the community. The central courtyard, intended for recreation, had become a breeding ground for snakes and other hazards, posing a danger to students. Recognizing the importance of creating inclusive and safe spaces, Taller Síntesis embarked on a mission to revitalize the school and address these pressing issues.

Collaborative Intervention

In 2018, Taller Síntesis partnered with the Fundafrut Foundation to undertake a comprehensive intervention aimed at improving the school’s infrastructure and expanding its facilities. Guided by the principles of sustainability and community engagement, the project sought to create a learning environment that would not only benefit the students but also serve as a resource for the entire community.

Design Principles

The intervention was guided by three key principles:

  1. Climate Adaptation: Recognizing the importance of adapting to local climatic conditions, the project extended the existing roof to create ample eaves that provide shade and protection from the sun. Permeable enclosures were installed to promote cross ventilation and natural light, while the central courtyard was leveled to create space for recreational activities and sports.
  2. Child-Centric Design: The project prioritized the needs of the students, redesigning the building to accommodate their scale and perspective. High windows were enlarged to offer expansive views of the surroundings, fostering a sense of connection to the outdoor environment. Additionally, seating areas and social spaces were integrated to promote interaction and community building.
  3. Community Integration: Understanding the importance of community engagement, the project expanded the school’s facilities to serve a broader range of functions. New spaces, including access areas, bathrooms, kitchen facilities, and workshops, were added to meet the needs of both students and community members. A central access square was created to provide the community with its first public gathering space.

Impact and Outcomes

The revitalization of the 29 de Noviembre School not only addressed the structural and environmental challenges of the old building but also had a profound impact on the community. Students were inspired to engage more actively with the school, leading to increased participation in extracurricular activities and extended school hours. This, in turn, sparked renewed interest from parents and community members, who visited the school to witness the positive changes firsthand.

Conclusion

The 29 de Noviembre School Reconstruction Project stands as a testament to the transformative power of collaborative design and community engagement. By addressing the unique needs of both students and the broader community, the project has not only revitalized the school but also catalyzed positive change in the surrounding area. As a result, the school has become more than just an educational institution—it has become a vibrant hub of learning, collaboration, and community development.
