Located in Illaroo, Australia, the Bundanon property stands as a beacon of creative arts and education. Gifted to the Australian people in 1993 by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd, this center aims to foster an appreciation for landscape, art, and ideas. Kerstin Thompson Architects undertook the task of designing the Bundanon Art Museum & Bridge, integrating the site’s rich history and landscape into its architectural expression.

Purpose & Location

Situated on 1,000 hectares of bush and parkland overlooking the Shoalhaven River, Bundanon celebrates the intersection of Indigenous heritage, pastoral history, and artistic legacy. It serves as a platform for research, education, and the celebration of art and ideas, emphasizing the intrinsic connection between landscape and creativity.

Design Concept

The design concept revolves around integrating various aspects of the site’s history, including Indigenous culture, pastoral heritage, and the Boyd family’s legacy. It seeks to create a cohesive ensemble of buildings and landscapes that reflect the dynamic landscapes depicted in Arthur Boyd’s paintings, incorporating themes of fire, flood, and the juxtaposition of natural and cultural elements.

Climate Resilience

Given the site’s vulnerability to climate change, with recent bushfires and flooding incidents, the new structures are designed with resilience in mind. The Art Museum and The Bridge, a Creative Learning Centre, are strategically positioned to withstand environmental challenges while maintaining harmony with the surrounding landscape.

The Art Museum is seamlessly embedded within the landscape, while The Bridge spans 160 meters across a gully, serving as both a functional structure and a symbol of resilience. These new additions, along with existing buildings, are united by a central Forecourt and Arrival Hall, creating a cohesive and centralized visitor experience.
