Torrefiel-Orriols Equality Unit: Fostering Community Connection

A New Hub for Equality and Community Engagement

The Torrefiel-Orriols Equality Unit in Valencia marks the city’s second neighborhood office, distinguishing itself by being the first to have a dedicated space. Housed in a ground-floor apartment within a cluster of protected housing units around Plaza Salvador Allende, the unit stands as a significant addition to the area, sharing space with various other facilities.

Creating a Community Reference Point

Initiated by the City Council, the unit aspires to become a focal point for community engagement, serving as a meeting ground for individuals and organizations alike. The primary focus revolves around fostering actions that promote equality and prevent gender violence within the community.

Designing for Everyday Life

In a departure from the impersonal design often associated with public facilities, the Torrefiel-Orriols Equality Unit is conceived as a space rooted in everyday life. The design aims to infuse warmth, countering the perceived coldness prevalent in public spaces designed over recent decades.

Blending Domestic Elements with Heritage

The architects sought recognizable materials associated with the domestic sphere, weaving them into the narrative of a renovated house dating back to 1943. This approach ensures a seamless adaptation to the new spatial configuration while maintaining a connection with the heritage of the structure.

Embracing Diversity in Form and Function

While embracing domestic elements, the unit introduces distinctive forms and spatial configurations to accommodate change. The design prioritizes creating an enveloping atmosphere while respecting the varying levels of privacy mandated by the program. From the entrance, the unit unfolds its different rooms, including a backyard, fostering a sense of proximity.

A Groundbreaking Approach: Gender Impact Report

The Torrefiel-Orriols Equality Unit is trailblazing as the first municipal project to incorporate a gender impact report. This report introduces an evaluative framework to assess the effectiveness of tools and spaces in actively promoting equality within the community. This forward-thinking initiative underlines a commitment to creating spaces that not only serve practical purposes but also contribute to the advancement of societal values.
