SOKEC Community Cultural Center: Reviving Tradition in Hrušovany u Brna

Architectural Rejuvenation in the Heart of Hrušovany

In the historic center of Hrušovany u Brna, the new Socio-cultural center, named SOKEC, emerges from the remnants of an old Sokol building. The village, devoid of a conventional public square, finds its communal heart in the Sokec area—a perpetual and essential element for the locals.

Preserving Heritage in Reconstruction

The project, undertaken by caraa.cz, successfully retains the original genius loci while providing the community with spaces for social, cultural, and sports events. The revitalized Masarykova Street, redefined during the reconstruction, seamlessly integrates with the entire complex, preserving the essence of the village.

A Focal Point: The Sokec Building

Central to the area is the Sokec building, characterized by its compact, transparent design housing a versatile multi-purpose hall. This architectural gem becomes the nucleus for various community activities, a symbol of connectivity and cultural vibrancy.

Versatile Spaces for Dynamic Events

Internally, the building unfolds into three primary spaces: a multi-purpose hall, a restaurant, and an adjoining garden with a sports area. The flexibility of these spaces allows for their amalgamation, creating a spectacular venue for significant municipal events. Additionally, two smaller halls on the first floor cater to the routine activities of associations, athletes, and citizens, offering panoramic views of the garden.

Unifying Form and Function

The two-story wings adjacent to neighboring houses house service operations and facilities, embracing an unambiguous, dignified form. The architectural language pays homage to the quality of Sokol buildings from the First Republic, aligning ideologically and typologically.

Diverse Offerings for Every Age Group

The garden, strategically designed, caters to various age groups. The Club, reserved for the youth, boasts a sound-isolated music rehearsal room in the basement and a versatile space on the upper floor for concerts or projections. Adjacent to the garden, the Warehouse serves a dual purpose—housing garden equipment and providing a space for the Seniors’ Club. The hundred-year-old linden tree stands as a majestic centerpiece, surrounded by a green slope with engaging game elements.

A Cultural Oasis in Hrušovany u Brna

SOKEC Community Cultural Center not only breathes new life into the historic center but also establishes itself as a cultural oasis—a space where tradition and modernity harmoniously coexist, fostering a sense of community and shared experiences.
