Redefining Coffee Experience Komfortabel Anguk Coffee by Studio Motif

Introduction

Komfortabel Anguk Coffee, a specialty coffee shop in Jongno-gu, South Korea, is the latest venture by GRANHAND, known for its commitment to infusing fragrance into everyday life. Studio Motif spearheaded the architectural design, focusing on creating a space that intimately captures the essence of coffee aroma.

Transformation of Space

The initial construction site presented challenges, with limited space due to the full Gross Floor Area. To overcome this constraint, Studio Motif opted to demolish parts of the outer wall, introducing a three-dimensional aspect to the interior. By sacrificing a small portion of the interior space, external features like cantilever eaves were incorporated, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The strategic use of glass partitions further dissolved the rigid separation, resulting in an airy yet intimate atmosphere within the compact site. The removal of the outer wall also facilitated increased natural light penetration, minimizing the reliance on artificial lighting.

Embracing Nature-Friendly Materials

A hallmark of Komfortabel Anguk Coffee’s design ethos is the meticulous selection of nature-friendly materials, eschewing artificial or chemical components in favor of wood, stone, brick, and metal. Unlike conventional modern building materials, which may exhibit signs of deterioration over time, these natural materials age gracefully, acquiring a patina that enhances their allure. The deliberate use of “time-containing materials” underscores the philosophy of managing rather than merely maintaining the space’s aesthetic integrity.

Design Elements

Lawang plywood adorns the walls and ceiling, while the floor is finished with cement brick, exuding a rustic charm that harmonizes with the overall ambiance. Drawing inspiration from the imagery of roasted coffee beans, the central counter is crafted from walnut wood, renowned for its deep brown hues and soft texture. Each hardwood block is meticulously arranged to showcase the end grain, enhancing the tactile experience for patrons. Birch plywood, prized for its clear grain and soft appearance, is employed for furniture and countertops, complementing the walnut counter while maintaining visual cohesion. The exterior facade, characterized by rough concrete finishing, juxtaposes the warm tones of the interior materials, creating a striking contrast that captivates the senses.

Through thoughtful design choices and a commitment to sustainability, Komfortabel Anguk Coffee by Studio Motif offers patrons a sensory journey that celebrates the essence of coffee in an inviting and harmonious environment.
