Revitalizing Marvila: The Marvila Apartment by KEMA studio

The Marvila Apartment, situated in one of Lisbon’s historic industrial districts, represents a transformation of an attic space into a vibrant, open living environment. Led by KEMA studio, the project aimed to harness the panoramic views of the Tagus River while paying homage to the industrial heritage of Marvila.

Project Background

Marvila, known for its industrial past and working-class roots, has undergone significant urban regeneration in recent years. The Marvila Apartment project sought to breathe new life into this historic district by converting an uninhabitable attic into a luminous retreat, offering sweeping vistas of the cityscape.

Concept: The Lighthouse

Dubbed the “lighthouse” of the building, the apartment was envisioned as a sanctuary atop the urban landscape. The design aimed to create a space that felt disconnected from the bustle of city life while embracing the surrounding sky and sea views.

Spatial Transformation

The project involved a comprehensive overhaul of the attic, including the replacement of the entire roof and structural renovations. By reimagining the apartment’s layout and staircase geometry, the team introduced a functional bathroom and improved accessibility.

Openness and Brightness

Central to the design philosophy was maximizing natural light and creating an open, airy atmosphere. Private areas such as the bedroom and bathroom were housed in a separate volume, while the living room remained unobstructed. Skylights and dormer windows flooded the space with light, complemented by strategically placed mirrors to enhance the sense of spaciousness.

Minimalist Aesthetic

The interior aesthetic embraced minimalism, with natural tones and clean lines dominating the space. Decorative elements inspired by Marvila’s industrial character, such as metal accents and brick tiles, added a touch of authenticity to the design.

Sustainable Materials

A key consideration in the project was the use of sustainable materials, including fiber cement, colored wood fiber, plywood, and brick. This commitment to eco-friendly materials reflects KEMA studio’s dedication to responsible design practices.

Conclusion

The Marvila Apartment stands as a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design. By reimagining an underutilized space and infusing it with light, openness, and nods to its industrial past, KEMA studio has created a functional yet evocative living environment that celebrates the spirit of Marvila.
