Crafting Tranquility Her and Its House by Atelier Yipan

Nestled in Pudong, China, Her and Its House, designed by Atelier Yipan, stands as a testament to thoughtful residential architecture tailored to the needs of a busy surgeon. This 50 m² abode was meticulously crafted to provide not only functional workspaces but also serene havens for relaxation.

Architectural Context

Commissioned by a surgeon with demanding professional obligations, the design brief prioritized the integration of a spacious workbench alongside areas dedicated to rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Atelier Yipan embarked on reimagining the apartment, dividing it into four distinct “rooms” to optimize spatial flow and functionality.

Spatial Planning

Leveraging the existing building structure, the design team strategically manipulated ceiling heights and wall configurations to delineate various functional zones within the apartment. A circular streamline was introduced to elongate the occupants’ journey through each room, enhancing the spatial experience with a sense of continuity and openness.

Functional Zones

Each room within the apartment serves a multifunctional purpose, accommodating activities ranging from cooking and dining to work and relaxation. By orchestrating changes in ceiling height and wall placement, Atelier Yipan created a dynamic interplay between enclosed and open spaces, fostering a sense of envelopment and freedom within the interior.

Cave-Like Retreat

One of the rooms within the apartment is designed as a cocoon-like sanctuary, exuding a sense of tranquility and stability. A wooden platform provides ample storage while offering unobstructed views of the surrounding greenery, establishing a harmonious connection with nature despite the enclosed setting.

Courtyard Oasis

Treating the courtyard as a roofless extension of the interior, the design team erected towering walls to envelop the space, creating a secluded sanctuary. A light pavilion serves as a focal point, inviting contemplation and relaxation amidst the lush surroundings. The integration of water features in separate spaces enhances the ritualistic experience of washing and bathing, elevating everyday activities to moments of serenity.

Reflections on Completion

As the project reached fruition, Atelier Yipan reflected on the journey of creation, finding solace in the tranquil ambiance of the completed residence. The camphor trees outside provide a natural barrier, symbolizing the shelter and serenity the apartment offers its occupants amidst the bustling cityscape of Pudong.

Conclusion

Her and Its House epitomizes Atelier Yipan’s commitment to crafting residential spaces that harmonize functionality with tranquility. Through meticulous spatial planning and thoughtful design interventions, the apartment offers a sanctuary where work and relaxation seamlessly coexist, catering to the unique lifestyle needs of its inhabitants.
