Slices of City A Landscape Sculpture

Slices of City A Landscape Sculpture

Overview

“Slices of City” is a multidisciplinary project encompassing architecture, sculpture, landscape design, town planning, and art. It is an integral part of the urban development project for the city entry of Clichy and will occupy the site for a period of two years before its demolition.

Town Planning: Completing Clichy’s Block

The project’s dimensions and forms are directly influenced by the built masses of the urban fabric, creating a cohesive shape that aligns with the surrounding environment. Stretching linearly over 30 meters, the project serves as an urban facade, offering a contemporary interpretation of the Martre street.

Art: Kinetic Sculpture and Optical Illusion

“Slices of City” is not just a static installation but also a kinetic sculpture that reimagines the existing blind wall through a series of homotheties. These homotheties, positioned at eye level, create various visual effects that change as observers move around the sculpture. At night, reflectors installed on the slices diffract the headlights of passing cars, transforming the project into a luminous and dynamic sculpture.

Symbolism: Reflecting Urban Transformation

The “Slices of City” project symbolizes the ongoing transformation and dynamism within the city of Clichy. By reinterpreting the iconic figure of the Parisian suburb’s blind wall, it represents the city’s evolution, including the revitalization of housing environments, construction of new facilities and residences, development of office buildings and commercial spaces, and the creation of vibrant public areas.
