Located in Seki-shi, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, the Space Piercer Orthopedic Clinic underwent a transformative renovation in 2023. Led by T2P Architects Office, this project aimed to revitalize the clinic while honoring its legacy of serving as the doctor for the women’s field hockey team at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Renovation Vision

The client, inheriting the clinic from her father, sought to modernize the facility while remaining deeply rooted in the local community. Rather than constructing a new building, the focus was on renovating the existing space to reflect the client’s identity and commitment to sports medicine.

Design Approach

The renovation commenced with the removal of the existing entrance canopy and walls, creating a welcoming waiting room that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding environment. Embracing the client’s connection to sports, the design aimed to evoke a sense of openness and accessibility.

Structural Integration

A key feature of the renovation is the incorporation of a single track running through the wood structure, both indoors and outdoors. This design element serves dual purposes: it highlights the clinic’s commitment to mobility and structural integrity while enhancing visibility and wayfinding for visitors.

Town Connectivity

The wooden structure not only provides a visual focal point but also serves as a conduit for connecting the clinic to the surrounding town. Through strategic placement and design, the interior spaces offer glimpses of the exterior, fostering a sense of continuity and community engagement.
