Redefining Health: Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen

Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC) stands as Northern Europe’s largest hospital dedicated to preventing and treating diabetes. Designed collaboratively by Mikkelsen Architects, STED, and Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, it represents a paradigm shift in healthcare architecture by integrating nature and user-centric design principles.

Fostering Well-being through Biophilic Design

At the heart of SDCC’s design philosophy lies the integration of nature into every aspect of the hospital experience. The building is organized around a large garden and six smaller courtyards, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces. The use of anodized aluminum and expansive glass sections in the façade enhances this seamless transition, promoting a connection with nature.

Human-Centered Design for Enhanced Experience

Recognizing the impact of traditional hospital settings on patient well-being, SDCC prioritizes user involvement in its design. The hospital aims to create a pleasant experience for patients at every stage, from arrival to consultation. Common areas are reimagined to encourage active engagement, aligning with themes of diet, exercise, and education.

Harnessing the Healing Power of Nature

Research underscores the positive influence of nature on mental and physical health. SDCC leverages biophilic design principles to create a symbiotic relationship between indoor and outdoor environments. The omnipresence of nature serves as an integral part of treatment, promoting a healthy lifestyle and fostering well-being among patients and staff.

Promoting Health and Equality

SDCC embodies principles of democracy, diversity, and equality. Warm wooden interiors and abundant green spaces contribute to a calming atmosphere, reducing stress and promoting healing. The hospital’s scale, materiality, and inclusive design reflect a commitment to placing human needs at the forefront of healthcare architecture.

Accessible and Integrated Design

Situated within the Herlev Hospital grounds, SDCC provides a welcoming point of arrival for visitors. A lush landscape greets visitors at the main entrance, leading to a public rooftop garden accessible to all. With ample parking facilities and a seamless integration into the surrounding context, SDCC ensures accessibility and inclusivity for all.
