In Örebro, Sweden, Marge Arkitekter has crafted an innovative design for the Gardens Care Home, prioritizing the well-being and comfort of its elderly residents. Lead architects Susanne Ramel and Linda Björn spearheaded the project, which encompasses 8625 square meters of thoughtfully designed space aimed at fostering social interaction and connection with nature.

Emphasizing Green Outdoor Environments

Drawing from contemporary research highlighting the importance of green outdoor spaces for the well-being of elderly individuals, the Gardens Care Home places a strong emphasis on providing attractive garden areas and opportunities for social interaction. The spatial design prioritizes comfortable living spaces with easy access to private gardens, outdoor areas, and communal facilities.

Direct Access to Nature

The two-story building design allows residents to enjoy direct access to gardens, either through ground-level atrium courtyards or expansive roof terraces on the second floor. Large window sections throughout the interior provide visual connections to the courtyard gardens, enhancing residents’ sense of security and encouraging exploration of the outdoor environment. Corridors and individual room units are strategically interspersed with visitor centers and shared spaces, promoting a sense of belonging and community among residents.

Facilitating Social Interaction

Marge Arkitekter believes that the organization of interior spaces plays a crucial role in facilitating dynamic social interaction among residents, staff, and visitors. Robust and durable wood paneling adorns the facades facing the atrium courtyards, complemented by carefully curated landscape elements such as trees, water features, and plants. Fiber cement patterns, reminiscent of textile cross-stitch embroidery, adorn the facade, blending harmoniously with the surrounding green fields. This unique architectural profile, coupled with the monastery-like organization of internal atrium courtyards, symbolizes an attractive and secure living environment tailored to the needs of elderly residents.
