Transforming Tradition: Lugo’s Public Market Renovation

The renovation of Lugo’s Public Market, undertaken by OLAestudio in collaboration with MERCASA, embarks on a mission to reimagine the inherited architecture by erasing and eliminating elements added over time. Originally conceived by renowned rationalist architect Eloy Maquieira in 1936, the market stands as a testament to his talent despite his premature passing. The project pays homage to Maquieira’s vision while infusing contemporary elements to breathe new life into the structure.

Restoring Transparency and Connectivity

The renovation, initiated in the 1990s, is anchored on two fundamental principles: stripping away interior additions and enhancing connectivity with the surrounding square. By removing obstructive elements within the space, visibility into the shops is maximized, and the upper floor seamlessly integrates with the ground level. A central balustrade-bench serves as a unifying element, while vibrant colors such as white, green, and gold infuse the space with a fresh and inviting atmosphere.

Embracing the Outdoors

One of the key interventions involves opening the market to the exterior environment. A stone plaza precedes the ground floor entrance, inviting visitors into the vibrant marketplace. The facade is redesigned to create a welcoming entrance, allowing the access ladder to hover above the recessed space. This transformation not only enhances accessibility but also contributes to reclaiming public space previously dominated by vehicles.

Harmonizing with Heritage

The renovation project extends beyond the building itself, incorporating elements to connect with the city’s historical context. The rooftop is adorned with colored gravel, a nod to the neighboring environment, while a concrete walkway links the market to an underground car park. Skylights and wooden accents serve to humanize the space, framing views of Roman remains, underscoring Lugo’s rich heritage as a significant city of imperial Rome in Northern Spain.

Pursuit of Lightness and Timelessness

Central to the renovation endeavor is the pursuit of a design that is light, warm, and enduring. While demolition and opening up spaces were primary focuses of the project, the subsequent design elements aim to create a timeless ambiance that transcends fleeting trends. By blending modern aesthetics with respect for heritage, the Public Market renovation in Lugo stands as a testament to the city’s evolution while honoring its storied past.
