Conceived as a tribute to the island’s seafaring community, this initiative by the Municipality of Magdalen Islands seeks to breathe new life into a significant site and foster community engagement among residents and visitors alike.

Reflecting on Maritime Heritage

The Place des Gens de Mer pays homage to the laborers who once toiled at sea, anchoring their legacy within the fabric of the village. Built upon the foundations of the defunct processing plant, the layout of the Place draws inspiration from the plant’s processing chains and sorting tables, serving as a poignant reminder of the area’s maritime heritage. To create a sense of intimacy amidst its bustling surroundings, the Place is encircled by an openwork wooden stockade, guiding visitors along a journey of discovery while evoking the undulating motion of a stormy sea.

A Multifaceted Gathering Space

Designed as a multifunctional hub, the Place des Gens de Mer boasts a range of amenities aimed at enhancing community interaction. From a service wing to a belvedere offering panoramic views, from a public market zone to a stage and agora, each feature is meticulously crafted to foster connectivity and engagement. Wooden counters and benches, protruding and oscillating, mirror the docks, inviting visitors to pause and immerse themselves in the maritime atmosphere.

A Component of Island Heritage

The Place des Gens de Mer forms an integral part of a larger initiative known as Le parcours insulaire. Serving as the inaugural site in a series of 12 panoramic locations selected for their cultural and historical significance, this public space is complemented by signage, interpretation aids, and interactive terminals, offering visitors insights into the island’s rich heritage. As visitors traverse the site, they are guided by a local artist’s poem, which weaves together the narrative of the sea and its enduring influence on the island community.
