Commemorating the Great Irish Hunger

Commemorating the Great Irish Hunger

The Irish Hunger Memorial, designed by 1100 Architect in collaboration with landscape architect Gail Wittwer-Laird and artist Brian Tolle, stands as a poignant tribute to the Great Irish Hunger of 1845-1852. Situated in Battery Park City alongside the Hudson River, this memorial serves as a solemn space for reflection, inviting visitors to delve into the history of the famine and its enduring relevance to global hunger issues today.

A Symbolic Landscape

Constructed upon a foundation of Irish limestone and illuminated glass, the memorial features a rugged landscape reminiscent of abandoned potato fields. Within this terrain, various species of native Irish plants thrive, while walls constructed from stones sourced from each of Ireland’s 32 counties symbolize national unity amidst hardship. Inscribed upon the monument’s base are narratives detailing the history of the Great Irish Hunger, contextualizing the tragedy within the broader spectrum of worldwide hunger crises.

Journey Through History

From the western side of the base, visitors embark on a journey, ascending through a passageway that leads to a reconstructed famine-era cottage from County Mayo. This cottage, generously donated to the project, serves as a poignant reminder of the human toll of the famine. Upon leaving the cottage, visitors traverse through the meticulously crafted landscape, navigating overgrown potato furrows and fields.

Elevated Perspectives

The memorial’s landscape extends beyond its physical boundaries, cantilevering over an illuminated stone and glass base structure. Rising from street level to a height of 25 feet, the structure offers visitors sweeping vistas of the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. This elevated vantage point provides a poignant juxtaposition, emphasizing the resilience of the human spirit amidst adversity.

Conclusion

As a testament to the enduring legacy of the Great Irish Hunger, the Irish Hunger Memorial stands as a symbol of remembrance and resilience. Through its immersive design and evocative narratives, the memorial fosters a deeper understanding of the famine’s impact while encouraging contemplation on the ongoing struggle against hunger worldwide.
