Revitalizing Spaces JF Apartment by ZALC Arquitetura
Situated in São Paulo’s vibrant neighborhood of Higienópolis, the JF Apartment by ZALC Arquitetura epitomizes modernist and brutalist influences, catering to a couple with a profound appreciation for art. The project, completed in 2022, reflects the couple’s affinity for artworks, particularly those of Burle Marx and triptychs, which guided the interior design process.
Artistic Integration
Prioritizing the couple’s art collection, including prominent pieces by Burle Marx, the design concept was curated around these artworks. Emphasizing their significance, the placement of paintings was deliberated even before initiating the layout process, setting the tone for the apartment’s ambiance.
Spatial Transformation
Originally compartmentalized, the apartment underwent a strategic reconfiguration to maximize space and functionality. Removal of the service bedroom facilitated the expansion of the kitchen area, delineated by sliding doors, fostering a seamless transition between zones.
Innovative Design Solutions
Flexibility and innovation were central to the project’s execution, evidenced by the transformation of existing bedrooms. Introducing new closing possibilities, such as a curved metalwork and glass wall, allowed for dynamic spatial configurations while enhancing visual appeal.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite the inherent imperfections of a brutalist modernist apartment, the design team navigated challenges to ensure a cohesive aesthetic. Preservation of the original wooden floor required meticulous restoration, complemented by strategically incorporated curves, reminiscent of Burle Marx’s iconic sidewalk designs in Rio de Janeiro.
Artistic Flourish
Punctuated use of color, predominantly in furnishings and artworks, accentuated key elements within the space. Inspired by Mondrian, the entrance door to the master suite showcased a bold color palette, juxtaposed against a backdrop of pristine white walls, further enhancing the apartment’s artistic allure.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the JF Apartment stands as a testament to ZALC Arquitetura’s ingenuity and sensitivity to their clients’ preferences. By seamlessly integrating modernist and brutalist influences with curated artworks, the design not only revitalizes the space but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of São Paulo’s urban landscape.
