In 2023, Proctor & Shaw undertook the challenge of extending a residence in Dulwich, United Kingdom, transcending the conventional boundaries of domestic architecture. With a keen understanding of the site’s constraints and the Dulwich Estate’s requirements, the architects embarked on a journey to reimagine the typical extension project.

Innovative Roof Design

The extension’s design is a testament to creative problem-solving, where privacy, natural light, and scenic views are ingeniously integrated to enhance the living experience for a family of seven. The serrated edge eaves detail, characterized by exposed rafter tails, serves as a delightful balance between light ingress and privacy, adding a distinctive charm to the architectural composition.

Seamlessly Integrated Living Spaces

At the rear of the property, a new living space emerges beneath a striking angled roof, inspired by the architectural nuances of local houses. This cavernous yet inviting space seamlessly connects with the expansive garden patio, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.

Holistic Design Approach

Collaborating closely with Barbara Samitier Landscape and Garden Design, the architecture and landscape are meticulously integrated, harmonizing the built environment with the natural surroundings. The sloped site is thoughtfully organized into sequentially stepped ‘rooms,’ each serving a distinct function, from utility areas to outdoor sitting spaces.

Material Palette

The design palette balances cool and warm tones, with robust concrete and porcelain tile grounding the space, juxtaposed with the warmth of natural Douglas fir timber and rich red-pigmented zinc. Bold splashes of color define utility zones, adding vibrancy to the overall composition.
