Sustainable Transformation: Songshan Community Building Renovation

Sustainable Transformation: Songshan Community Building Renovation

Revitalizing Nature-Inspired Living

In 2021, the Squirrel & Mountain Nurturing Community, also known as the Songshan Community, emerged as a trailblazing nature-based integrated community in China. Aiming to foster inclusivity for all, regardless of physical abilities, the community seamlessly blends art, culture, and farming. The existing space, established with a vision of fairness, inclusivity, and sustainability, has grown beyond its original capacity. Consequently, Partyfriendship, the architectural force behind the project, embarked on a participatory transformation of an old textile factory in the village, set to be completed in the fall of 2023.

Demountable Design for Future Flexibility

Constructed on a leased old factory building, the new rooms are designed with a demountable structure to accommodate future relocations. To ensure cost-effectiveness and sustainability, the architects opted for a structurally lightweight, rapidly installable building system using plywood wood components. This Legos-like assembly allows for easy disassembly and reuse, aligning with the principles of affordability and ecological responsibility.

“Dry” Assembly for Community Participation

Introducing a revolutionary “dry” assembly concept, Partyfriendship enables non-professional workers to actively participate in the construction process. Utilizing CNC technology, building components are precisely cut from standard sheets based on architect’s drawings and shipped for easy installation. The prefabricated parts come with a simple instruction manual, requiring only a rubber mallet for assembly. This approach turns the construction process into a communal endeavor, akin to a large family building blocks together.

Empowering Community Involvement

The spatial transformation project emphasizes active participation from all-natural community residents. Co-construction activities are woven into the construction process, fostering a sense of belonging and community cohesion. Adults take charge of building the main frame, while children get involved in creating their tables and chairs. This collective effort reinforces the community spirit, turning the construction phase into a shared experience.

Nesting Strategy for Versatility

The nesting strategy employed by Partyfriendship involves introducing smaller buildings into existing ones. This approach offers numerous advantages, such as cost savings on heating and lighting by creating independent small spaces. It also provides a high degree of variability in space functionality, encouraging children to envision future possibilities and unleash their creativity. The strategy facilitates readjustments and repositions spaces according to the evolving needs of the Songshan community, adapting to different user requirements at various ages. Whether it’s a work area, public space, workshop, children’s play area, or stage, the design caters to the diverse needs of this vibrant community.
