Crafting Innovation: Plykea Workshop, London
Introduction: A Hub of Creativity
Situated within London’s vibrant Here East technology campus, Plykea Workshop stands as a beacon of innovation. This fast-growing creative cluster, nestled within the former 2012 Olympic site, is a melting pot of pioneering technology, artistic endeavors, and academic pursuits.
Redefining Production Spaces
Commissioned by Plykea, a prominent manufacturer specializing in custom fronts and worktops for IKEA cabinets, Erbar Mattes embarked on designing the company’s flagship production studio. The goal was to create a modern facility that would unite manufacturing, administration, and design under one roof, fostering collaboration and cohesion.
Seamless Integration
Transforming a vacant commercial unit, the project seamlessly integrates modern manufacturing facilities with independent working spaces and welfare amenities. By consolidating staff onto a single floor, Plykea fosters a non-hierarchical environment conducive to interaction and creativity.
Harmonizing Workspaces
Visitors and staff enter through a naturally lit manufacturing area equipped with cutting-edge machinery. Views into the production space not only enhance the working environment but also activate the street frontage, engaging passersby with the manufacturing process.
Acoustic Considerations
To mitigate manufacturing noise while maintaining visual connectivity, bespoke partitions incorporating acoustic glazing were installed. These partitions, constructed with open web timber studs and clad with sound-absorbing wood wool boards, strike a balance between transparency and sound insulation.
Architectural Solutions
A solid plywood stair leads to a studio space housing design and administration functions, while a mezzanine offers a vantage point overlooking the workshop. Repurposing existing structures, such as a steel lift shaft, adds character and functionality to the space.
Material Cohesion
A light-colored resin floor unifies the various rooms, enhancing daylight distribution and creating a cohesive material language. This design approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
Conclusion: A Testament to Craftsmanship
Plykea Workshop is more than just a production facility; it is a testament to craftsmanship and innovation. By showcasing the art of making, Plykea reflects its commitment to producing beautiful, practical, and sustainable products while nurturing a dynamic and collaborative work environment.
