Chang’an Innovation Square: Revitalizing Urban Spaces
Introduction: A Vision for Transformation
Situated in Chang’an, an industrial hub in Dongguang, China, the “Super Link” project spearheaded by Zhutao Architecture Design Studio seeks to redefine urban development by integrating space, industry, and systems. With a focus on revitalizing an aging factory district, this endeavor aims to ignite new momentum in Chang’an’s urban landscape.
Site Strategy: Linear Community
The project’s strategy revolves around transforming the old factory area into an innovation park, starting with the renovation of stores, houses, and warehouses along the main street. By integrating the façades of buildings along North Lianfeng Road, a continuous urban interface spanning 300 meters is created, fostering connectivity and vitality within the area.
Spatial Concepts: Point, Line, Plane
Embracing the principles of “Point-Line-Plane,” the design features two major gateways marking the entries to the Innovation Square. These urban nodes serve as focal points, connecting various levels of movement and spatial flows. Open corridors and stairs weave through the site, creating a three-dimensional pedestrian network and urban garden.
Dialogue Between New and Old
Central to the project is the dialogue between new construction and existing structures. The design seamlessly integrates modern elements with historical context, preserving the heritage of Chang’an while injecting new vitality. Through meticulous attention to detail, including the use of traditional materials and innovative construction techniques, the project breathes new life into the old factory district.
Engaging the Community
Public spaces, such as the Gathering Park and open entrances, serve as hubs for community engagement and interaction. By activating previously underutilized areas and incorporating commercial activities, the project fosters a sense of belonging and encourages social cohesion within the neighborhood.
Harmonizing Modernity and Tradition
To maintain continuity with the existing architecture, new street-front buildings are clad in tiles reminiscent of Chang’an’s historical identity. The juxtaposition of old and new is evident in the thoughtful design choices, from façade materials to ground paving, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
Conclusion: A Beacon of Urban Renewal
The Chang’an Innovation Square stands as a testament to the transformative power of architecture in rejuvenating urban spaces. By embracing innovation while honoring tradition, this project not only revitalizes a neglected industrial area but also reimagines the future of Chang’an, offering residents and visitors alike a vibrant and dynamic urban experience.
