Gallery – Salon H: A Fusion of Art and Wellness
Embracing Transformation in Iga
Situated in Iga, Japan, Gallery / Salon H by Niimori Jamison Architects stands as a testament to the evolution of the city. Once renowned for its historical significance, Iga has transitioned into an industrial hub, marked by towering factories along the Meihan expressway. Gallery / Salon H finds its place in a residential area established in the 1970s to accommodate local factory workers.
A Vision Beyond a Hair Salon
Initially conceived as a modest hair salon, the project’s scope expanded upon a closer examination of the area. Rapid urbanization had driven up costs and left the city lacking communal spaces. Furthermore, a nearby high school, boasting a rare craft department in Mie Prefecture, lacked a platform to showcase student artwork.
Innovative Design for Community Engagement
Gallery / Salon H occupies a corner lot, strategically positioned to beckon pedestrians as a thoroughfare and leisure spot. The building’s unconventional alignment serves to invite passersby to utilize the space, creating a dynamic interaction with the surroundings. The inclusion of a tunnel-like gallery space, running parallel to the walkway, further integrates the project into the fabric of the city.
Dynamic Spaces for Art and Reflection
The gallery space gradually expands towards the rear of the site, offering versatility for various exhibitions while infusing the interiors with filtered, uneven light from the curved ceiling above. Inside the salon, the deliberate placement of mirrors creates an illusion of depth, enhancing the spatial experience. Cementitious lining, both inside and out, adds texture and depth to the interiors, encouraging contemplation of our built environment.
Fostering Moments of Contemplation
Through subtle deviations from conventional geometries and thoughtful manipulation of natural light and reflection, Gallery / Salon H seeks to inspire moments of introspection within its visitors. As a fusion of art and wellness, it embodies the spirit of community engagement and creative expression, enriching the urban landscape of Iga.
