Introduction

Situated in Yongsan-gu, South Korea, KOMFORTABEL Namsan Coffee Shop represents a pinnacle of architectural design by Studio Motif. With an area spanning 210 square meters, this coffee shop, located on the top floor of a building in Huam-dong, Seoul, offers patrons a captivating vista of the Seoul cityscape.

Maximizing Space Appeal

The project commenced with a meticulous examination of the site, characterized by a rectangular plane and three elevations adorned with curtain walls, providing panoramic views of Seoul City. Studio Motif’s design approach aimed to enhance the site’s allure by optimizing its architectural features.

Strategic Floor Plan

A compact floor plan was devised, delineating a central rectangular area to serve as the focal point. Six pillars strategically positioned in the center space delicately delineate the boundaries between the interior and exterior, supporting the curved roof overhead. Unlike conventional walls, these elements impart a sense of flexibility, allowing the space to flow seamlessly.

Dynamic Design Elements

The roof, crafted in a curved form and finished with white satin paint, injects dynamism into the space, effectively dispelling any sense of claustrophobia. Additionally, a raised floor encircling the central area provides stability while accommodating seating and counters, ensuring visitors can enjoy the space comfortably.

Aesthetic Contrasts

Color plays a pivotal role in delineating spatial zones, with the central area adorned with a striking red carpet and dark walnut wood, creating a visual contrast with the surrounding environment. To further enhance the ambiance, the floor adjacent to the windows features bright wood, complemented by light red oak furniture and oil finishes. Low, wide seats are strategically positioned to offer unobstructed views, inviting patrons to immerse themselves in the scenic vistas.

User-Centric Design

Studio Motif prioritized user experience by offering a variety of seating options, enabling patrons to choose their preferred spot upon arrival. By carefully considering the fusion of site characteristics and café functionality, the design team curated an environment where visitors could engage with the space in diverse ways, fostering a sense of freedom and exploration.
