Crafting “SAZAE” Sauna: A Fusion of Art and Functionality

In 2022, Kengo Kuma & Associates unveiled the “SAZAE” sauna, a masterpiece nestled within the serene glamping facility “SANA MANE” near Naoshima’s tranquil inlet. This organic wooden sanctuary marries architectural brilliance with the natural beauty of its surroundings.

Wood Masonry Marvel

Constructed with precision, the “SAZAE” sauna presents a formidable challenge in wood masonry. Comprising 150 layers of CNC-processed 28 mm thick plywood, the sauna boasts solid walls with an average thickness of 450 mm, ensuring optimal heat insulation and retention.

Architectural Ingenuity

Externally, the sauna resembles a shell, adorned with countless folds that create captivating shadows. Internally, the pleats are meticulously shaped to embrace the body, offering a comfortable seating experience. Illumination seeps through a solitary oculus, fostering a meditative ambiance.

Complex Geometry, Controlled Design

Despite the complexity of its spiral pleated geometry, achieved through 1,500 plywood sheets, meticulous design and paneling were facilitated by advanced 3D CAD and programming techniques. This meticulous control ensured precision in every detail of the sauna’s form.

Optimal Environment

Unlike traditional saunas, “SAZAE” maintains optimum temperature and humidity levels despite its high ceiling. This feat is achieved through environmental simulations and carefully designed forced ventilation airflow, ensuring a comfortable and rejuvenating experience for visitors.

In essence, the “SAZAE” sauna stands as a testament to architectural innovation and functional excellence, offering visitors a harmonious retreat where art, design, and nature converge seamlessly.
