Innovative Design: Hexagonal Court, Homer Shop & Office by Jin Qiuye Studio
Introduction
Jin Qiuye Studio has created an innovative workspace and showroom for HOMERUS, a start-up specializing in solid wood bespoke furniture. Located in Beijing, China, the Hexagonal Court offers a unique blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Design Concept
The site, situated on the first floor of an industrial building, presented several challenges and opportunities for the architects. The owner’s requirements included product display and sales, business negotiations, daily office operations, small events and receptions, and product photography. Despite the small size of the space and the presence of thick steel columns, Jin Qiuye Studio aimed to create a versatile and visually appealing environment.
Spatial Arrangement
Rather than adopting a conventional layout with a central exhibition area, the furniture displays are arranged along the perimeter of the space. This design decision creates a central ‘inner courtyard,’ utilizing the vertical space provided by the double-sloped roof. Plain plaster walls divide the areas, with square holes allowing for visual connections and adding depth to the space.
Courtyard Design
The courtyard, elevated slightly above the surrounding galleries, serves as a focal point of the design. Green brick paving and surrounding white walls create an outdoor ambiance, offering a refreshing contrast to the interior. The space can accommodate various activities, including projections, gatherings, and launches, providing a semi-enclosed environment for visitors.
Entrance Experience
The entrance experience is carefully crafted to engage visitors from the moment they arrive. A small wooden bridge and sloping wall guide visitors towards the entrance, with green plants adding a touch of natural beauty. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a depressed space leading to the atrium, creating a sense of anticipation and discovery.
Interior Ambiance
The exhibition hall features a variety of wood colors, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Green bricks and whitewashed walls line the atrium, while natural elements such as banana leaves and bamboo branches add a touch of tranquility. Warm light filters through the space, enhancing the overall ambiance and creating a peaceful environment for conversation, exploration, and work.
Conclusion
The Hexagonal Court, Homer Shop & Office exemplifies Jin Qiuye Studio’s commitment to innovative design and thoughtful craftsmanship. By integrating natural elements, versatile layouts, and unique spatial arrangements, the project offers a refreshing approach to office interiors, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal.
